day 2 (evening, post trial) Alfendi & Bigby
[Later, as everyone returns from the event of that horrific trial and execution back to their rooms, Alfendi returns to his room. The rest aren't back yet, so he has a chance to think over what happened. It feels like a fever dream - this is not how justice works. This is never how it should've worked. He believes in the system, he believes in laws, and yet they've failed him here. An attempt to abstain resulted in a death. He isn't even upset about the death as much as he is upset about things not working as they should, and now they are nowhere near finding the truth behind the whole matter. They're back at square one, and frankly? It's infuriating.]
[He hears Bigby come in and he turns around, rubbing slightly at his weary, exhausted eyes.]
Bigby, hello. [A pause. He considers it for a moment, before speaking up - perhaps it's best to talk over this with someone.]....This might be a hard thing to talk about now, but...do you think it was inevitable that Diva got executed? Could we have done more to prevent that?

when Alfendi looks up and notices him enter, he'll notice that the sheriff is tired and is ready to be done with the day. any thoughts about what they should do next can wait until the morning. or so he thought. ]
Alfendi. [ a brief nod to the man as he moves to sit on the edge of the bed. at least until Shijima and Alice return when they will eventually fight over who has it. ] I... I can't say for sure. Judy mentioned bugs in the system. Pretty sure she can tell you what we should have expected, but ― Judy's a bitch, so.
[ aka he bets she lied just so they were forced to see the aforementioned bugs in action. ]
We'll need to try and ask her the next chance we get, either way.

[He smiles, like always does, but it's an empty one. He's exhausted mentally. Emotionally...well, that's a bit of a different thing, really, but it doesn't change the fact that what happened wasn't exactly anything he approved of.]
[He shrugs, his tone light.]
That, or she didn't know any better. Anyways, I'm sure she'll claim innocence and ignorance when we ask her, I'm sure of it.
[And there's a pause - he turns away from Bigby, smile ever present - but his voice is low. Quiet.]
...I believed Diva, you know. I believed she was innocent. But I didn't do enough to fight for her.

[ one of the oldest excuses in the book. why did it sound so genuine, then? it was just one of the may frustrating things about this place. everything came up as a question mark and the one person that can provide answers talks like they should all know why they were there.
he gives Alfendi a look, soaking up how affected he seems to be about this. Bigby has his own regrets, his own problems. he was more involved in Diva's deaths than others. but he's been around death for a long time, and dead innocent people even longer. a soft groan escapes his lips as he leans back on his arms, doing his best to accommodate his... currently uncomfortably... situation. ]
What do you think you could have done to change what happened? Do you honestly suppose you could have done something by fighting or are you wanting a reason to blame yourself for a shitty situation?
[ Bigby ended up believing Diva was innocent in the long run, as well. and he's got his guilt over the matter, but that wasn't going to bring Diva back. Alfendi needs to see that as well. ]
doodles dumb stuff for this thing because why not
[He's still turned away, so Bigby can't see his face, the way his mouth tightens into a frown when he hears what the other has to say. Of course he couldn't have done anything. Of course it was futile. You can't change how a mob thinks. Her fate was already sealed by the time Leo pointed fingers. Why didn't she defend herself? Say that she had nothing to do with it? She walked into her own grave like it didn't even matter.]
[It takes a moment for him to speak up again.]
I don't need to use anything to blame myself, Bigby. [He says, glancing over his shoulder at the other man.]
I just jumped to conclusions, is all. We all did. We're all so desperate that we condemned a woman because of her previous actions. And the people who did this are still free to do as they like.
[He smiles. His eyes don't.]
We need to be cautious next time. But that goes without saying, doesn't it?.
omg IT'S SO GOOD
Bigby remains silent, noting Alfendi's strange, almost distant response to his questions. this guy carries skeletons in his closet, no doubt. he would immediately assume that's a bad sign for just about in this facility, and it remains to be seen if it's bad coming from him. his thoughts and demeanor, on the other hand, make it seem like he was truly affected by what had happened. talk about a hard time getting a read on the guy. ]
Let's not jump to conclusions on what happened here either. Majority voted to abstain. Judy told Alvin it was a good idea to do so, but the system still picked her. I doubt it's because one person decided to vote she was guilty. If that's the case, I would be right up there and tied with her. [ a sigh follows as he tries to formulate his thoughts a bit better. ] ... Even if we thought she may have been guilty by mistake, most of us didn't vote to kill her. Alright?
What we need to figure out is if that system of Judy's really does just run off randomization, or if there's something else to it. Don't think we can vote to abstain next time this happens, though.
